Google Commits $15 Billion to Build AI Mega Hub in Visakhapatnam
Massive Investment in Visakhapatnam
On October 14, Google unveiled plans to invest $15 billion in establishing a large-scale artificial intelligence hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This marks the company’s largest commitment outside the United States to date.
What the AI Hub Will Include
The project will encompass AI infrastructure, state-of-the-art data centers, renewable energy systems, and a new subsea (underwater) cable gateway. It is to become India’s first gigawatt-scale data center campus, supporting high compute and low-latency demands of AI, cloud services, and digital platforms.
Timeline, Jobs, and Economic Impact
Scheduled over a five-year period (2026–2030), the initiative is expected to generate over 100,000 jobs, says Civil Aviation Minister N. Ram Mohan Naidu. According to estimates from Access Partnership (commissioned by Google), the AI hub could contribute around $15 billion to US GDP through new AI and cloud activity during this period.
Technical Ambitions and Connectivity
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced plans to scale data center capacity into multiple gigawatts. Visakhapatnam is being positioned as a global connectivity hub through new subsea cable infrastructure linked to existing underwater cables. This will also enhance India’s data resilience and reduce latency.
Government Support and Strategic Vision
At the announcement event, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed full government support. Vaishnaw encouraged Google to lay additional submarine links—such as a route via Andaman Islands—and suggested a visakhapatnam–Myanmar cable to improve connectivity for India’s northeast states.
Partners & Use Cases
The AI hub is being developed in partnership with AdaniConneX and Airtel. It will host high-performance computing platforms that power Google services such as Search, YouTube, and Workspace. The facility will also act as a testbed for AI research and innovation by startups, enterprises, and academic institutions.
