Israel Returns 45 Palestinian Bodies in US-Brokered Truce

Israel has returned 45 Palestinian bodies to Gaza authorities, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, bringing the total number of bodies handed over under a US-mediated ceasefire arrangement to 90.

In Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, AFP reporters observed morgue staff unloading refrigerated trucks stationed next to Red Cross vehicles. The exchange deal, facilitated by US President Donald Trump, stipulates that for each deceased Israeli returned, Israel would transfer 15 Palestinian bodies. Earlier in the week, Hamas handed over three Israeli bodies and one Nepalese body on Monday, followed by three more Israelis and one unidentified individual on Tuesday.

The broader swap agreement has also seen the return of the last 20 surviving hostages from Gaza, in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli jails. The deal has also contributed to a pause in the ongoing fighting and bombardment. However, 20 other hostages’ remains remain in Gaza, placing domestic pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to link humanitarian aid with the recovery of these bodies.

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, has warned that Gaza’s supply lines could be cut off if Hamas fails to return the remains of the remaining soldiers. Meanwhile, a key border crossing between Gaza and Egypt stayed closed, despite reports suggesting it might reopen for aid convoys, as Israel continues to demand the handover of all deceased hostages.
